چکیده
PURPOSE To evaluate the potential of using motexafin gadolinium (MGd) to characterize atherosclerotic plaques of deep-seated arteries with MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS We exposed vascular endothelial cells (EC) and smooth muscle cells (SMC) in vitro to varying concentrations of MGd. The fluorescence properties of MGd were then exploited using confocal microscopy to image exposed cells. For an in vivo validation study, we performed surface coil-based and intravascular coil-based high-resolution MRI of the iliac arteries and the abdominal aorta of three atherosclerotic Yucatan pigs. Subsequently, MGd enhancement of the target vessel walls was quantitatively evaluated and MR images were correlated with histology of the target vessels. RESULTS The in vitro study confirmed the intracellularization of MGd in both cell types and determined the optimum MGd dosage of 0.004 mmol/kg that produced the sufficiently high intracellular fluorescent intensity. The in vivo study showed a steady increase of MGd enhancement to approximately 25% at three hours postinjection of MGd. MRI showed areas of strong enhancement along the lumen boundary, which corresponded to fibrous tissue seen in histology. CONCLUSION This study provides initial evidence that MGd may enhance MR vessel wall imaging for the characterization of plaque in deep-seated arteries.

Intravascular 3.0T MR Imaging: A feasibility Study in Swine
Introduction: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a useful imaging tool for visualization of vessel walls and characterization of atherosclerotic lesions, providing high resolution and multiple imaging planes with no risk of radiation. The use of MR technology is, however, limited in imaging of deep-seated arteries, primarily due to insufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with a surface coil. ...
متن کاملGadolinium Enhancement in Intracranial Atherosclerotic Plaque and Ischemic Stroke: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis
BACKGROUND Gadolinium enhancement on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed as a marker of inflammation and instability in intracranial atherosclerotic plaque. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the association between intracranial atherosclerotic plaque enhancement and acute ischemic stroke. METHODS AND RESULTS We searched the medical ...

PURPOSE To investigate the feasibility of an intravascular imaging antenna to image abdominal aorta atherosclerotic plaque in swine using 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Atherosclerotic model was established in 6 swine. After 8 months, swine underwent an MR examination, which was performed using an intravascular imaging guide-wire, and images of the common iliac artery and the ...
متن کاملA Deep Model for Super-resolution Enhancement from a Single Image
This study presents a method to reconstruct a high-resolution image using a deep convolution neural network. We propose a deep model, entitled Deep Block Super Resolution (DBSR), by fusing the output features of a deep convolutional network and a shallow convolutional network. In this way, our model benefits from high frequency and low frequency features extracted from deep and shallow networks...
متن کاملKinematics parameter extraction of longitudinal movement of common carotid arterial wall in healthy and atherosclerotic subjects based on consecutive ultrasonic image processing
Introduction:In this study, a non-invasive method based on consecutive ultrasonic image processing is introduced to assess time rate changes of the carotid artery wall displacement, velocity and acceleration in the longitudinal direction. The application of these parameters to discriminate healthy and atherosclerotic arteries was evaluated. Methods:Longitudinal displacement rate of common ...
